How To: Bring back Telnet on macOS High Sierra (10.13.1)
So I finally decided to take the plunge and get up to date with macOS High Sierra.. only to find they’ve stripped yet another piece of functionality that I use on a daily basis. Telnet. Well, sorry Apple, but I actually use telnet, so I’m going to bring it back!
Step one – install homebrew:
Homebrew is “The missing package manager for macOS”, from which we’re going to download and install telnet from. Go ahead and enter the below, in a terminal window:
/usr/bin/ruby -e “$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)”
Step two – get telnet back:
Now that we have homebrew installed, we can go ahead and grab the missing telnet package from their repo. Go ahead and enter the below, in a terminal window:
brew install telnet
Step three – test our handy work:
Congratulations! You’ve just installed telnet on MacOS High Sierra.
Go ahead and test it by telnetting to something…
telnet www.google.com.au 80
Connected to www.google.com.au.
Escape character is ‘^]’.
